The Gospel of Consolation.

“Divine comfort.”

Comfort ye my people. Says the Lord. Nothing like being comforted. I say.

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, sadness, crying, or pain. All the old ways are gone.” Revelation 21:4

Since I was a little boy a small Band-Aid and a little kiss on my knees has made me effectively forget anything my bruised knees were demanding.

There is something in comfort that has to do with justice if for no one else but for a personal satisfaction of the hurting one that somebody loves him enough to comfort him from his pain.

Believers do well by looking forward to the banishing of death, sadness, crying, pain and all sorts of suffering. When the old ways are gone it will have been worth the painful wait. Working during the day and dreaming restlessly at night until Comfort dawns a New Era about to arrive and arrive to stay. Rejoice that those days are not far away and they’re coming to stay forever.

The little child within me rejoices in the fact that the human suffering, the pain of sickness, the agony of disappointment and all the evils of this world will be gone and gone forever to return no more thanks to Jesus who carries me away.

The comfort we’re talking about is not a mother’s comfort, not a father’s strong arms and secure comfort, or the comfort of the number of my family members, or the comfort of chariots and horses. It is a divine comfort so that we can confidently say every pain will have been worth it in comparison when comfort arrives.

Nothing like comfort for a mourning and groaning soul, nothing like comfort for the aching body, nothing like comfort for the sick, for the betrayed, for the abused, for one who is bullied, because it is a divine comfort for which we could say “is hand made in heaven” by Jesus that unto him be the glory and honor forever and ever.

Without hesitation I say: “It is God’s will that we might be comforted.”

Rejoice, little flock for your comforter is a person and that is Jesus the victorious Lord over death by resurrection.  Jesus is the consolation of Israel. The Gospel is a Gospel of Consolation.
