REPEAT AFTER JESUS, “OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN”
Prayer is all about God. Prayer is all about us. Prayer is all about Heaven.
“Our Father who art in Heaven.” Every temptation aims against these three facts.
For the fallen angel: “If I dethrone God, I will be like Him.” For Eve: “If you eat the fruit, you will be like God.” For Jesus: “If you worship me, all this I will give you.”
Temptation aims against God’s will. The cross of being obedient to the will of God is easy and the burden of carrying it is light.
It is God’s will for us to believe in God as our Father in Heaven, just as Jesus is the Son of God and the head of one body of which we are members. Temptation aims to separate our minds from God as our Father in Heaven.
Satan personally tempted Jesus, God the Son, with words that do not outright deny the fatherhood of God over Jesus, which is something God the Father affirmed at his baptism. No, all Satan aims to do is to make us doubt that fact that we are the children of God.
His business is not so much to sell us outright lies, but to twist, pervert, and to show malice on the good soil of our faith. “If you are the Son of God.” These words aim against the fatherhood of God. Since you believe in that and in Heaven, why not do this or that?
Nothing will keep us from falling but to believe and to pray with all our heart, “Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be your name.” # 66.
This is the teaching elder on duty in matters of Prayer.
