Gerry Gutierrez' Update
Jesus the
Ambassador of God who brought prayer on earth. “I can truly believe only in him who
believes in me”
The wisdom of God
seems to have designed prayer among men to promote oneness and fellowship,
interdependence and agreement. This is the most indispensable ingredient of
prayer according to the conditions of Jesus for praying. Human
relationships among believers must be the reflection of our relationship of
agreement with the invisible and spiritual God to whom no one has seen or can
see. We cannot claim
to love God to whom we have not seen if we do not love our brother to whom we have
seen. We are talking
about love and not just “tolerance” of one another. Our holy religion
is one of relationship based on love and not one based on enterprise that is
based on works and performance. The great commission as great as it might be it
is not greater than the great commandment. Fellowship among
men is only possible in mutual submissive love, humble trust and oneness. Since
such a task is nearly impossible to achieve in the strength of the flesh, it
can only happen in the strength of the Lord so that no one can boast. The most common
attitude among those who, in pride and self-rightness give up the practice of
reconciliation is indifference or living in denial. Waiting for things to
change by themselves for good on their own, is like waiting for a fish to jump
out of a pool of water formed by the rain of the day before. It won’t happen.
It is also like a contest to see who can holds his breath the longest.
The job
description of Jesus was to be the minister of reconciliation. It is not to
conquer the world by proselytism that we are called but to make disciples of
one, two or three by being with them in common union and oneness as Jesus is
with his Father and the Holy Spirit and as Jesus was with Peter, James and
John. Jesus has died
for more than togetherness. Without aggressively seeking the communion of
the saints with one another, I am afraid we are “cowards and
hypocrites.” Anyone can stay grudgingly together, but it takes the whole
power of the omnipotent God to be one in Jesus. It is not easy to
beg for anyone’s acceptance, love and reconciliation, but any and every
sacrifice will be worth it if you gain “agreement, oneness, mutual love, trust
and belief in one another.” You will go blue
in your lips and face if you keep holding your breath expecting the other
person to blink. Holding your breath can be a very dangerous practice that
can lead to death. A brain without the oxygen provided by breathing dies first
and your thinking is altered and before you know it you have passed the point
of no return. If you died while
things on earth were tied, then you will find out in heaven they also remained
tied. You do not want to go home to heaven with unresolved issues. You
might have your “valid reasons” on earth to start the duel of who holds the
breath and keep silent the longest; but in heaven those reasons are not only
invalid but also a shameful evidence of your disobedience to your call to be
like Jesus as a minister of reconciliation. An ambassador is
one who practices diplomacy, which is defined as “The art of stepping on
someone’s shoes without ruining the shine.” The language of the court in not a
shoe with spikes but soft slippers of grace and peace. We are to walk
together in unity and agreement and respect, for
